I started losing hair at a very young age. Most of my family and friends jokingly teased me about it.

Unfortunately, it made me very self-conscious. I have taken Finasteride for many years, sprayed Minoxidil daily on my scalp and I had 2 hair-transplants.

Yep, having a full head of hair just wasn’t for me. I then looked into micro-dot hair pigmentation.

I did a small test patch at a provider at Cape Town, he basically tattooed my scalp black and it looked extremely unnatural. After a year, it also turned blue. Luckily, I stopped him 20 minutes into the procedure and he only covered a small part.

After all of this, I was extremely scared of trying this again. All I wanted was a very natural result, something no-one would even notice. I then asked a friend, who is a make-up artist, whether she knows of anyone. She recommended Permanent Makeup by Gwendoline. After a Skype consultation (as I don’t reside in Gauteng), I made a booking. This was a big decision for me.

At 5pm, the night before my procedure, I called Gwendoline and said I am anxious and nervous. Gwendoline calmed me down and explained to me that she will be so subtle that no-one would even notice. She explained that it took 3-4 treatments and that she will start very subtly and then we can improve as we progress.

I arrived and what an amazing experience!

Gwendoline was kind but firm, but above all, she was extremely professional. Her studio looks like a medical practice. She explained the whole procedure to me, we decided on the colour together and she opened the needle in front of me (which was important to me). She also explained everything that she was doing (mixing of the ink, testing the size of the dots and involving me in every step of the process). It was like visiting a doctor who REALLY cared about your wellbeing. Everything was clean, clinical and over exceeded my expectations.

After Second and Third Treatments

After one session – there was a slight improvement. This was exactly what I wanted. I was very happy as no-one even noticed. I did another 2 sessions with Gwendoline.

After the 3rd session, I look completely normal!

No-one has even stared at my scalp or asked any questions. For me it’s made a huge difference. It is just a shade over my scalp and it gave me the confidence to trim my hair to a Zero or a number One on Electric Shaver. I now, don’t use any medication, no minoxidil, won’t ever do a hair transplant in my life again – this has greatly helped me transition from a “thinned out look” to a buzz cut with sufficient coverage.

SMP by Gwendoline

I am so happy with my result – each treatment took the whole day out of Gwendoline’s diary. She spends the whole day with you. So please fella’s – for the hours she puts in and the result – don’t let the cost bother you. It’s effective, it looks natural and this is a highly professional aesthetic service. Gwendoline is the best in South Africa. NO ONE else in SA performs this treatment on this level. We are privileged to have her. She is an expert in her field. I trust no one else, hence why I flew up 3 times to visit her and will be coming back every year for my yearly check up. This is far more cost effective and in my case better than a HT, medication or daily sprays!

Thank you Gwendoline – you have made life for this man so much more bearable. No more feeling uncomfortable in harsh lights at the office, or in the sun or at a restaurant. I can keep my head up high and walk with confidence.

The SMP procedure is calculated according to the Hamilton Scale (for men) and the Ludwig Scale (for women)

Hamilton Ludwig scale for men and women respectively

You may be wondering…

What is Scalp Micro-pigmentation?

In short, scalp micro-pigmentation is the process of tattooing the scalp with tiny micro-dots in order to give the resemblance of stubble – a short buzz-cut appearance which looks best when any remaining hair is kept very short.  To the experienced practitioner, scalp micro-pigmentation is a simple procedure, it is relatively non-invasive and there is no down time.
A specialised pigment (not just any tattoo ink) is matched to the existing hair colour (if any exists) or skin tone and a hairline is agreed upon based on where it used to be.  Hundreds of micro-dots are then added to the  scalp – focusing on the areas of thinning hair.

The same SMP process may be used to camouflage a variety of head scars – including FUE scars.
Pain, if any, is minimal.  While this can be a time-consuming procedure, it has  proven to be an excellent alternative – and fast-growing in popularity.

Women and Alopecia

It may surprise you to know that women make up a staggering 40% of hair loss sufferers.  Women are 53% more likely than men (26%) to seek medical intervention options.  While a large variety of specialized medications and treatments are available for both male and female alopecia sufferers, there are no conclusive studies proving effective long term relief for alopecia, which may negatively affect even highly visible parts of the body – including eyebrows and eyelashes.

Permanent Makeup by Gwendoline – Brows for Alopecia Client

In some instances, women may experience the condition temporarily, for example during pregnancy, whilst suffering hormone imbalances or following intense shock.  However, after treatment, hair growth will usually return to normal, providing there is no underlying medical cause which may have remained undiagnosed.

The negative social implications have devastating effects on both the self-image and emotional wellbeing of this growing number of men and women.

Each and every case of alopecia needs to be respectfully treated on a unique and individual basis and I would encourage anyone suffering from alopecia to seek advice from an experienced professional in order to explore the treatment options most suitable to individual lifestyles.  Working in this field is as highly rewarding to the practitioner, as it is to the would-be client, in that it dramatically improves self-esteem, restores dignity and confidence – thereby effectively giving the client a new lease on life.

Areola Simulation – the final chapter https://www.permanentmakeup.co.za/areola-simulation-the-final-chapter/ https://www.permanentmakeup.co.za/areola-simulation-the-final-chapter/#respond Thu, 25 Oct 2018 09:38:57 +0000 https://www.permanentmakeup.co.za/?p=6987

At Permanent Makeup by Gwendoline – nothing gives us greater pleasure than to celebrate victory and overcoming with our beautiful warrior survivors.

You may feel concerned about taking that final step to freedom and restoration – we understand that.  For this reason, with our lovely client’s permission, we have prepared this post to set your mind at ease.  When professionally applied within a sterile environment and with proper home care, areola recolouring is a safe and minimally invasive procedure.

Our warm smiles will welcome you to our premises and after completing the obligatory forms, you will be ushered into the private treatment room.  The first step is a thorough consultation with our highly experienced professional, during which, amongst many other things, we will discuss your desired result.  Customised colour options will be recommended based on skin tone and decisions made.  The areola size and general look-and-feel will be be discussed in every detail.  A powerful topical anaesthetic will then be applied while you rest for 20 minutes.

Before (with impression)

Everything required during the procedure will be prepared and dispensed during this time.  After removing the topical anaesthetic, the area will be sanitised. Using state-of-the-art equipment a circular impression will be applied central to the nipple.  The colouring will commence immediately after, first capturing the impression outline (before it disappears).

Filling the main colour follows – carefully shading to create a realistic textured effect.  Then the tiny capillaries and creases are applied using a minute nano needle. Finally the shadows and highlighted areas, together with montgomery glands are placed.  A secondary topical gel anaesthetic is applied throughout the procedure to ensure your comfort – while the majority of clients take a nap.

The final result, while it will initially appear a little darker (until healed), will simply astound!  You will be handed everything required for your home care healing and will leave feeling nothing short of pure elation.

Always do extensive homework before deciding on the artist you will trust to give you this final step to wholeness and normality – perfectly round ‘bullseye-type’ areolas are not natural looking…

Creativity plays an important role – in our practice, we perform these procedures from our heart to yours.

We offer complimentary consultations – call (011) 465-3117 to book yours today!

BEFORE

After a warm welcome to our elegant studio (see pics below), you will be ushered to our waiting area to complete the required paperwork (contact info, medical  disclosure, consent and indemnity) for insurance purposes. This will give us the information to enable us to keep your safety front of mind.  A thorough consultation precedes every single procedure.  During this time, we will listen intently to your required outcome so that we have a full understanding – which will enable us to deliver accordingly.  At this time, based on your requirement, we will assess and share our best advice based on our extensive experience regarding what permanent makeup is realistically able to deliver.  Suitable colours, shapes, design options will all be discussed and decided upon together. You will see first hand all sealed sterile needle cartridges (or microblades), equipment, utensils, implements and topicals that will be used during the course of your treatment.  A full A-Z description of your chosen procedure will be discussed and explained in detail.  Should you feel uncomfortable at any stage, the treatment will either be cancelled or deferred to a later date. This is your face after all – and mutual trust and understanding are essential elements prior to commencing.  Please take a moment to read our Important Pre-Procedure Information

DURING

Your safety is and always will be our top priority, followed by your comfort throughout the procedure.  After thoroughly cleansing the area to be treated, the relevant anaesthetic protocol will be applied. At PMUbyG, we use only the very best safe topical anaesthetics and extreme caution is exercised throughout. Cost is not a consideration for pain control, as pain would cause unnecessary swelling and bruising.

Action shot performing scalp pigmentation

The topical anaesthetic cream will remain in place for around 20 minutes before commencing the selected treatment.  Using a cosmetic pencil, we first draw an elegantly designed outline and let you visualise your best shape.  Every design is unique and will be adapted to suit each client’s individual facial features, taking into account bone structure, natural symmetry/asymmetry, personality and desired end result.  On your approval, we will then carefully and gently place the pigment colour/s layer by layer, using computerised precision equipment – slowly building up an elegant design that looks authentic, natural and flawlessly you!
After the ‘first pass’, a secondary topical anaesthetic gel is applied to further ensure a painless and pleasantly tolerated treatment is experienced.  Finally, we will check for an even colour saturation and perfect symmetry has been achieved, before handing you the mirror.

AFTER

The final step is a complimentary ‘cooling and soothing’ pamper treatment.  A durable barrier cream is then applied and the particular aftercare protocols are explained in detail.  Extreme caution needs to be exercised for the following 10 to 21 days in order to achieve a great healed result.  You will be handed an organza gift bag containing everything required to take care of your newly applied permanent makeup.  Before leaving, your 6-week follow up treatment will be booked.  We are always available to address any concerns or answer any questions that may arise during the healing process and encourage our clients to contact us first.  We are confident that you will become part of our family of clients who refer us unreservedly to your friends and colleagues.

This post was written especially for the more mature client who would like to safely enhance her appearance without looking foolish or worse still, plain ridiculous.

The truth is that many senior citizens experience uncontrollable shaking hands the comes with parkinson’s disease and many more are sight impaired.  This sadly prevents these beauties from being able to look their best as they simply throw their pencils away and sadly give up trying.

Gone are the days of dreary old grannies sitting in the corner knitting – these days our aged communities are active and have a fabulous and positive zest for life attitude!

We have such good news for you Darling!  At Permanent Makeup by Gwendoline we specialise in all forms of permanent makeup and have been doing treatments at an advanced level for the past 18 years.  We specialise in natural looking makeup.  Here are some frequently asked questions regarding doing makeup for the 60+ category.

Q:     Will permanent makeup suit me even if I have grey hair (and brows)?

Healed soft eyebrows

A:     At PMUbyGwendoline, we stock a wonderful soft range of colours to suit all skin tones and shades of hair.  As the inevitable lines start to form on one’s face, we need to keep all the colours used really soft so as to minimise the appearance of these lines. Instead, channel the focus on the soft beautiful colours of the lips, brows and eyes – which in turn will reflect one’s true beauty – from within.  Soft taupe tones will gently blend into greying eyebrows and will deliver the appearance of fuller brows – even when there’s very little natural hair remaining.

Q:     I take loads of medication on a daily basis – will this affect my outcome?

A:     The truth is that certain medications can affect the outcome of your chosen permanent makeup procedure. For a rough guide to prohibited meds, please click HERE.  The good news is that in many cases, we are able to proceed provided you bring us a doctor or specialist note giving you permission to proceed.  Most permanent makeup procedures are 2-part treatments – meaning that one refinement session will be required to ensure a lovely end result.  Any anomalies or imperfections are addressed and corrected at the second appointment.

Q:     How do I know the shape and/or style will age well over time?

Full lip treatment

A:     Fact is that very few girls can carry off the dark-haired Kardashian beauty look – especially as the years march on. Adding a soft muted pop of colour just above the lash area truly adds an interest and a wonderful sparkle to the eyes.  Keeping brow shapes as close to your natural brow bone as possible will never become outdated.  While a pretty pearly-pink or soft apricot will replace the lost definition of your lips while giving you the freedom to be you – without needing to fix your lipstick after every meal.  You most certainly can look well-groomed and even resplendent (thefreedictionary.com:  Splendid or dazzling in appearance; brilliant or to shine brightly) – even though the years may be creeping (ok, galloping – sometimes) on!

Q:     Is this a tattoo and how much pain is involved?

Soft brows and eyeliners

A:     Yes indeed – permanent makeup is a cosmetic tattoo.  Any time a pigment (colour) is placed in the skin, this falls under the genre of tattoo.  We use the very best imported topical anaesthetics to ensure our clients’ comfort throughout our procedures.  The secondary topical contains a minuscule touch of epi (0.02%) which is a vasoconstrictor – there is therefore no flow of body fluid whatsoever and the client will remain totally relaxed – many clients actually fall asleep during our treatments. Fact!

Q:     Am I too old for permanent makeup?
A:     You are never too old to make the best of your appearance!

My mother remarried at the tender age of 74.  While she’s not without a few health issues, she’s still really attractive and reasonably active.  We did her eyebrows and of course I did her wedding makeup – she looked fantastic on her wedding day – don’t you agree?  Every woman has at least one stunning feature.  Which part of your face do you usually receive compliments for – your eyes, or perhaps your lips?  Which feature would you like to improve?  Contact us today so that together we can discuss how we can assist you to maximise your own beauty.

Every week we consult with clients who want to have a now-ex-boyfriend/girlfriend’s name or animal paw-prints removed.  Some company policies forbid visible body tattoos or in some cases the work has been poorly performed and now needs to be removed before re-doing the work with an experienced, qualified artist…
This is where tattoo removal comes into its own.

It must be noted that the chemical extraction methods are not for all tattoos though – and clients looking to have large tattoos removed should bear in mind that this process is much better suited to removing smaller areas.

Here is a case that we would like to feature.

Case Study 1

In our first case study, our client is a young woman in her mid-thirties who simply got tired of these ladybugs on her feet.

Tattoos to be removed

As these tattoos are really small, this is a simple procedure.  Due to the feet being an extremity of the body, feet typically tend to swell as the body’s normal defence mechanism kicks in – it is therefore important to keep the feet elevated as often as is practically possible.

Here you see the procedure in action:

Tattoo Removal (chemical extraction method)

Click here to watch video: Tattoo Removal (chemical extraction method)

A topical anaesthetic is applied to ensure our client’s comfort.
Great care is taken not to overwork the area.

Within a few weeks, a scab forms effectively ‘pulling’ the ink out of the skin as it dries and heals:

Tattoo Removal (chemical extraction method)

The redness surrounding the scabs is perfectly normal – simply the body expelling the ink via the macrophage process (white blood cells).

Tattoo Removal Healed (chemical extraction method)

Within 4 months our client’s skin is completely healed with minimal scarring present – a satisfactory result indeed!
This procedure was performed together with Nadine Wiggett from Nadine’s Health & Skin Care in Bothasig, Cape Town.

Case Study 2

Fact is that not all permanent makeup procedures are performed by properly trained artists.  In this case study, our client is a young woman in her late twenties.  She was about to be getting married and was desperate to get rid of the eyeliner that had slipped and gone skew.  Our hearts went out to this lovely girl when we consulted with her and we agreed to assist.

Tattoo Removal (chemical extraction method)

Tattoo Removal (chemical extraction method)

It must be emphasised that this removal method is certainly NOT suitable for all botched permanent makeup.  In this case however, given our extensive experience in this field, we were confident of a great outcome.

Here we have the same young lady 4 months later – after 2 removal sessions – no scars and a significant improvement in her appearance:

The bottom line?
Please do your homework thoroughly before deciding who to trust to perform your permanent makeup procedures and never ever bargain shop your face!

If you have a small tattoo that you are considering having removed, we would be happy to set up your consultation appointment:

Important Pre-Procedure Information https://www.permanentmakeup.co.za/important-pre-procedure-information/ Sat, 03 Feb 2018 12:35:23 +0000 http://permanentmakeup.co.za/?p=861 Your safety is and always will be our top priority.

Safety first

Every precaution is taken to ensure you will achieve the best possible Permanent Makeup result, safely.

Please take the time to read through this pre-procedure information document a week prior to having your desired procedure performed.

  • Preferably no Aspirin, Ibuprofen or any blood-thinning medications for 2 to 3 days prior to the procedure. (please check with your doctor before ceasing any medication/s).
  • No Alcohol for 24 hours prior to procedure.
  • No regular coffee (caffeine) that morning – decaf and tea is OK.
  • Please inform us in advance of any health-related issue that you are currently being treated for prior to your appointment.
  • Call immediately to reschedule your treatment if you have the flu, a cold, an upset stomach or any any viral infection.
  • Pregnant or nursing clients will regretfully need to wait until after delivery and nursing has ceased.
  • Permanent makeup is not recommended for persons who suffer from epilepsy, organ transplant, pacemaker or major heart problems.
  • Diabetic and on Insulin – the treating doctor’s written clearance is required.  Please ensure that you have had a small meal and are well hydrated prior to arriving for your appointment.
  • Chemotherapy Patients – the treating doctor’s written clearance is required.
  • If you have recently been diagnosed or treated for Glaucoma or undergone any eye surgery, your doctor’s written clearance is required for eyeliner procedures.
  • Should you regularly use Retin-A, Glycol Acid, Accutane products or recently had a medical skin peel, your skin may be too sensitive. Procedure/s may however be performed at our sole discretion.
  • If you have undergone Plastic Surgery on or near the procedure area, the scars should be a minimum of 8 – 9 months – alternatively your doctor’s written clearance for the procedure is required.
  • For obvious reasons, Botox and fillers need to have been done at least 6 months prior to doing permanent makeup procedures.
  • Should you be scheduled for eyeliner and wear contact lenses, please bring your lens case and spectacles to wear afterward. The eyes may be sensitive to light post-procedure, so do bring sunglasses.
  • Should you be having any of the lip procedures offered and have ever had a cold sore or fever blister, we require you to be on an anti-viral medication in order to prevent a breakout. Ask your GP for an anti-viral prescription, (usually either Valtrex or Zovirax is prescribed) to be commenced at least 1 day prior, the day of, and for at least 3 to 4 days following the lip procedure.
  • Full lip procedures are two-part, done 6 weeks apart, the medication will need to be repeated for the second procedure. While I cannot insist you take the anti-viral medication, I will not work on a client with a history of cold sores or fever blisters who is not taking preventative medication, as the colour will not hold in the breakout areas – thereby delivering a poor result.
  • Please bring your desired lip pencil and/or lipstick for colour matching.
  • Most permanent procedures, especially microblade eyebrows are a 2-part procedure – it is important to attend the refinement visit 6 weeks later, as all minor adjustments are made at this appointment to ensure the best possible result.
  • After your initial procedure, if you choose to have an alternative artist attend to your permanent makeup, you be immediately relinquishing us – know that any future work requested is at our sole discretion.
  • You may prefer to arrive for eyebrow or lip procedure appointments with your makeup on, so we can see exactly how you wish to wear it.

Very gently exfoliate your lips with a granular skin exfoliant or a toothbrush, beginning 3 days before your procedure, as this helps prepare the lips for the procedure.

To speed up healing of lips, I recommend purchasing Traumeel homeopathic tablets from your local pharmacy or health store.  Dissolve 1 tablet under your tongue 3 to 4 times a day for 5 days.

Please have a small meal prior to your appointment and come rested and VERY well hydrated, expecting beautiful results!

Please be on time – be considerate of other clients who are scheduled after you.  Should you arrive more than 5 minutes late for your appointment, you will regretfully need to be rescheduled.

Aftercare Instructions and Advice https://www.permanentmakeup.co.za/aftercare-instructions/ Thu, 01 Feb 2018 12:00:50 +0000 http://permanentmakeup.co.za/?p=653 Permanent cosmetics is not so much a science as it is an art and the body’s reaction in each and every person will be different.  Essentially, the procedure used to implant the pigment creates a vulnerability in the skin which must be carefully treated and allowed to heal naturally.

Permanent makeup is a substantial investment and it is vital that the correct aftercare advice is rigorously followed in order to ensure the best possible healed results.

Special eyeliner advice:

  • Splash twice with cold water and very gently dab dry with a clean soft towel or tissue.
  • Immediately apply the healing balm supplied with a clean cotton bud.
  • Repeat this process twice daily for 6 to 10 days.
  • Do not rub, scratch, pick or disturb the area that has been worked on in any way.  If it feels itchy – just tap the lid above or below – do not scratch.
  • Avoid prolonged contact with water (shower, bath, swimming pool, sauna) for minimum 10 days.
  • Take a bath instead of showering to avoid wetting the treated area for the first 7 to 10 days.
  • Refrain from using any lotions, creams, cleansers or anything other than the balm supplied on the area.
  • The pigments used are water-based – not oil-based.  Many lotions, creams and cleansers are chemical-based.  These chemicals could cause the freshly implanted pigment to raise to the surface and withdraw from the skin.

Should the area become uncomfortably dry – please apply a thin coating of the balm supplied (OR Bepanthen, Grapeseed, Jojoba, Sweet Almond OR organic Coconut oil).

Please replace your pillowcase and be sure to purchase a new mascara once your makeup application resumes.  (old mascara typically contains many bacteria, fungal spores and even mites!)

DO NOT USE ANYTHING ELSE AS IT MAY PULL THE COLOUR FROM THE SKIN.

General advice:

  • Keep hands, sweat and dust off the area.
  • After a couple of days the area will begin to enter the ‘peeling stage’.
  • This is a natural part of the healing process.
  • Eyebrows may tend to have a dandruff look.
  • Peeling on eyeliners is very rarely noticed.
  • Absolutely no sweating, gym or physical exertion.
  • Avoid the sun and tanning beds until the area has fully healed.  UV light fades and affects colours – so please no exposure for at least 4 weeks.  If this is not possible, protect the pigmented area by wearing a hat and sunglasses and apply a Total Sun Block (recommend Environ).

Special precautions for lip procedures:

  • Should you be prone to fever blisters or cold sores, please continue using your cold sore script medication until lips have healed.
  • Brush teeth and rinse after meals in order to remove all traces of food, salt and acidity.
  • Immediately apply a thin coating of the healing balm supplied (or Bepanthen, Grapeseed, Jojoba, Sweet Almond or Coconut oil) if necessary.
  • As healing progresses, the lips may appear chapped.
  • Be sure not to pick or pull any loose skin off the epithelial crust – it is VERY IMPORTANT that any flaking exfoliates of its own accord.
  • By pulling or picking at the epithelial crust, you will be forcing it and will pull the colour from the skin, thus defeating the purpose of the procedure and it could cause scarring.
  • After about a week to ten days, the light crust will have worn off and you may think there is no colour remaining.
  • It takes up to six weeks for the colour to mature to the final healed colour.
  • Immediately after the procedure, the colour is at its brightest as it is sitting on top of the skin.  As the treatment heals the colour will soften i.e. becomes lighter and thins out as your body naturally expels the excess pigment.
  • Your final result is a combination of the colour implanted plus the colour of your natural skin tone.
  • As the skin heals a waterproof barrier is created which will protect the remaining pigment.

Special precautions for Eyebrow procedures:

  • NO water, cleansers, creams, makeup or any other products on treated area for at least 12 days.
  • In the rare instance that the area has been weeping clear fluid – 6 hours after the procedure, very gently clean the area by dabbing with sterile water on a cotton pad, gauze or cotton bud.  Allow to air dry.
  • DO NOT rub, pick or scratch the treated area.  Let any crusting or dry skin  exfoliate naturally.  Picking may cause scarring.
  • Avoid direct sun exposure or tanning for 6 weeks after procedure.
  • Avoid heavy sweating (i.e. gym workouts) for the first 2 weeks.
  • NO facials, botox, chemical treatments and/or microdermabrasion for 6 weeks.
  • Avoid sleeping on your face for the first 10 days.
  • Should the brow area skin feel tight – you may apply a thin coating of the healing balm supplied (OR Bepanthen, Grapeseed, Jojoba, Sweet Almond or Coconut oil) only after 7 days – and only if necessary.  Dry healing provides the best result.

Please note:

–   Eyebrows will initially appear darker and bolder due to natural crusting for the first 10 to 12 days. This is very common for all permanent cosmetic procedures.
–   The eyebrows may appear to have ‘nothing left’ once the crust has exfoliated – please be patient.  The macrophage process pulls the pigment into the deeper tissues while it tries to expel the ‘foreign substance’ – this is perfectly normal and the pigment will usually ‘bloom back’ to the surface of the skin within 21 days.

It is very important to make a follow-up appointment for 6 weeks after the initial procedure in order to refine the new permanent eyebrows.  This will ensure a beautiful and pleasing result is achieved and will increase longevity of the new brows.

I DO NOT CHECK TO ESTABLISH WHETHER THE PERMANENT MAKEUP REQUIRES A REFINEMENT PROCEDURE UNTIL AFTER 6 WEEKS.

Please make an appointment for a 10 minute assessment check-up 6 weeks after the initial procedure.  This 10 minute assessment consultation is free of charge.

Should you feel that you require a refinement touch up, or if you are not sure, please call to make an appointment so that we may assess the viability of a touch-up.  This can only be done six weeks after the initial procedure.

All refinement touch-up work will be done at 50% of the initial cost, provided the touch-up is completed within three months of initial procedure performed by me.

Should you experience any concerns please contact us FIRST and we will advise the best treatment option for you.

Thank you for choosing

PERMANENT MAKEUP AND PREGNANCY https://www.permanentmakeup.co.za/permanent-makeup-and-pregnancy/ https://www.permanentmakeup.co.za/permanent-makeup-and-pregnancy/#respond Thu, 25 Jan 2018 14:21:29 +0000 http://www.permanentmakeup.co.za/?p=6373 PERMANENT MAKE-UP WHILE PREGNANT IS A NO-NO!

Pregnancy is all about eliminating any risks that may be of harm to the foetus over the nine month period. During pregnancy a women goes through drastic body changes relating to blood circulation, blood pressure, hormonal fluctuations, weight gain, etc. – all of which put the immune system under huge strain. Much like the need to stay away from certain foods, and obviously drugs and alcohol, permanent make-up procedures (or any tattoos) also pose a threat during pregnancy. Although it isn’t absolutely proven to be unsafe, it is highly inadvisable as there are many factors during the tattoo process that open up a can of worms for risk, regardless of how safe the permanent make-up studio is or how clean the instruments are.

A tattoo is technically a wound to the skin that takes time and nurturing to heal properly. Under normal circumstances this is a simple procedure, however the immune system of a pregnant woman could be somewhat compromised and therefore the risk of contracting a blood infection (hepatitis B, hepatitis C, tetanus or HIV) from contaminated instruments is heightened. Once contracted, treating these infections is very difficult as most medications are contra-indicated during pregnancy.

A weakened immune system also prolongs the healing time and increases the chances of skin infections like Staphylococcus. Although skin infections are easier to treat with various topical creams, any change in fluid that suggests a bacterial infection, provokes the risk of your baby contracting a secondary infection.

Stress and anxiety are a big consideration during pregnancy as the foetal brain is extremely vulnerable, especially during the first trimester. During this time, the neurons multiply, develop and attach themselves to one another to form the structure of the brain. Getting a tattoo, and more specifically permanent make-up, automatically raises your stress and anxiety levels and induces unnecessary stress on the baby which can lead to, amongst other things, a premature birth, low birth weight and developmental delays.

Besides for the health risks, getting permanent make-up while pregnant can also negatively affect your appearance. Undergoing a permanent make-up procedure involves injecting ink into the upper dermis layer of the skin – a process that can lead to an undesirable effect post-pregnancy. During pregnancy, the body tends to retain a substantial amount of fluid, making the skin swell and stretch. Tattooing on swollen skin will result in facial features that appear distorted and out of shape once your pregnancy is over and your body has ditched the extra fluid.

Permanent Eyebrows by Gwendoline

Although the risks associated with tattooing during pregnancy are highly improbable, they are still present and it is important to take precautionary measures to avoid undue harm to yourself and your unborn child. During pregnancy, emotions run high and often women tend to feel insecure about their body image. In efforts to rectify these feelings, procedures like permanent make-up become even more desirable, and understandably so. Despite the strong urge to book an appointment with your PMU Artist, it really is best to wait the few months until the pregnancy and breastfeeding periods are over.

Put baby first – rather be safe than sorry.

Both men and women benefit from permanent eyeliner. For our gents, we recommend a simple eyelash enhancement – which places a complimentary pigment in-between the lash root area (to give a thicker lash-line appearance) – this option delivers a subtle more defined eye contour.

For ladies, we offer the full range of eyeliner procedures – from standard to ultra-thick Latino liners – and right through to contrast colour shadows, winged liners, flicks, mucosal and French eyeliners. (most styles are featured on this page)

Beautiful from every angle!

We always pre-draw flicked our winged eyeliners – once you have visualized the template drawing, checked thickness, symmetry, length and approved the design, this liner is applied with absolute precision, finishing with a sharp flicked outer edge flick.  This style suits most eye shapes, however is particularly complimentary to almond shape eyes and creates a lovely illusion of elongation for round eye shapes.

A softly flicked eyeliner adds an intriguing air of mystery to the eyes and delivers a very attractive finish.

Allergy Sufferers

Do you suffer from allergies or sensitive eyes?
Permanent eyeliner may offer a lasting solution, allowing you to ditch the allergy-causing pencils.

A client who suffered tremendously with allergies – had this to say:

I have often thought of getting permanent makeup over the years, but my fear of needles and worse, the worry that I’d be stuck with something I wasn’t happy with – forever, always made me hesitate. As time went on, I found myself suffering more and more with allergies. My eyes were constantly itchy, red or watering, which caused my eyeliner to run and form smudgy globs at the corners of my eyes. This frustration, as well as a glowing recommendation from a friend who recently had her eyeliner done by Gwendoline, finally convinced me to go for it. And I am so glad that I did! The whole process was professional, efficient and, surprisingly, pain free! Gwendoline took the time to explain the full procedure, discuss the ‘look’ I was hoping for and agree on the colour. Her professional and knowledgeable demeanour helped put me at ease from the get go and being able to keep my eyes closed for the duration of the procedure meant I was better able to relax. Since getting my permanent eyeliner, I can’t believe the difference in my eyes! They look larger and better framed, but even more significant, they aren’t nearly as dry, red and itchy as they were before. My only regret is not having done it sooner! I highly recommend Gwendoline to anyone thinking about permanent makeup. Throw the pencils out and make an appointment! 🙂

IRIS
COLOUR

COMPLIMENTARY COLOUR/S

BLUE

WARM METALIC COLOURS.

Orange, Browns, Caramel, Copper and Gold will make blue eyes pop.  You may prefer to apply just a light dusting toward the inner part of the eyes.  Deep grey is a good option for very light blue eyes, while Navy enhances grey eyes.

BROWN

CAN USE ANY COLOUR.

Dark brown liners add depth and definition without the chance of heaviness if using black.  Plum, blue and navy are great options for very dark brown eyes.  Dark Brown is lovely when applied just inside the mucosal line.

GREEN

ALL RED-BASED COLOURS.

Great with Plum, Mauve, Purples and Burgundy.  Greeny-blue eyes look best with purple and lilac or Sea-Green and Deep Emerald Green. Warm Brown is a good option for light green eyes.

HAZEL

ARE A COMBO OF BROWN + GREEN

Steely Grey or Aubergine will accentuate the green speckles, while warm metallics or dark browns will bring out the yellow accents. Moss-Green or Purpley-Blue will accentuate different colour specks in the iris.
